General Dentistry FAQ

Why should I visit the dentist regularly?

Visiting the dentist regularly for routine preventive care helps keep your mouth free from problems such as cavities and gum disease. Many people only visit the dentist when they have a noticeable problem, and while they may think that this saves them money, the reality is that the treatments to repair and restore their teeth cost more money and time than routine dental visits at regular intervals. Regular dental visits allow our dentist to provide care that will help prevent dental problems from developing as well as monitor your oral health so that any problems which do develop are diagnosed as early as possible. We recommend that you visit our office every six months.

How often should I brush and floss?

You should floss at least once a day to clean the areas between your teeth and below your gumline. We recommend that you brush your teeth after every meal, or at least twice a day, including before you go to sleep at night. Use an ADA®-approved, soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste. You may also want to consider using mouth rinse. Please contact our office if you have any questions about brushing and flossing.

I’m afraid of visiting the dentist. What should I do?

Please speak with our team. We want your experience at Kathy Cosmetic Dentistry to be as pleasant as possible, we and take your fears and concerns very seriously. There are many strategies that our dentist and team can use to help you feel more comfortable, and we will work with you to find ways to alleviate your fear and anxiety so that you can receive the care you need in comfort and without stress.

When should children visit the dentist for the first time?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that children visit the dentist for the first time about six months after their first tooth erupts, or no later than their first birthday. These initial appointments do not usually include treatment but are intended to help your child become comfortable in the dental office and to monitor their oral growth and development. Your dentist is a resource for you in caring for your child’s smile and helping them learn good oral habits as early as possible.
