General Dentistry Q & A

What is general dentistry?

General dentistry includes all of the care and treatments a dentist offers to help patients maintain dental health and an attractive healthy smile. Dr. Kathy includes preventative, restorative, and cosmetic services in her general practice.

What is preventative care?

Preventative care is dental care that preserves the health of your teeth, gums, and the soft tissues in your mouth. This could include routine exams and professional cleaning and polishing as well as treatments to minor weakness or cavities in the tooth enamel. Dr. Kathy may also suggest fluoride treatments to strengthen tooth enamel.

What is restorative care?

Restorative care is the repair of damage or decay to the tooth. Dr. Kathy offers tooth colored composite fillings as well as inlays and onlays to repair and protect cavities and weaknesses in the tooth enamel. Crowns and bridges are used to protect weakened teeth or to keep teeth from shifting out of place when a tooth is lost. Dental implants are also restorative as they prevent surrounding teeth from moving out of place and provide stimulus to the jawbone, similar to that of a natural tooth root. When damage or decay reaches the pulpy interior of a tooth, Dr. Kathy will use a root canal treatment to clean and repair the tooth. Often a crown will be applied to protect the tooth from further damage. In some cases, dentures either full or partial dentures are used to restore a patient’s smile if several or all of the teeth need to be removed. Another restorative option could be a full mouth reconstruction where several different treatments are applied to address several dental issues at the same time.

What is cosmetic dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry’s primary aim is to improve the appearance of the patient’s teeth and smile. Popular cosmetic treatments include teeth bonding, whitening, veneers, and lumineers. Specialized orthodontic treatments like Invisalign® not only improve the appearance of a patient’s smile but do it without the “mouth full of metal” look common to traditional braces.
